No joke. It really is a disaster. Humanity screwed up big time on this. No do overs here.
This is not "immunity debt", whatever that made-up concept is supposed to mean. Get that out of your minds. This is reduced immunity from SARS-COV-2 infection driving other viral infections. It is a disaster.
LA Children's Hospital is full of sick kids.
465 patients checked into our ED in a 24hr period. No inpatient beds, 16 hour wait times just to be seen, up to 30% leave without being seen. Very sick patients boarding in ED for days. Mainly driven by RSV, Flu, & COVID. No end in sight. Thank you for attending my TED Talk.…

Out there, beyond the gate of gold.
Or w COVID infection. "If CD4 cells become depleted, for example in untreated HIV infection, or following immune suppression prior to a transplant, the body is left vulnerable to a wide range of infections that it would otherwise have been able to fight."
Twin tweet. Now how did they do that?

More collapsing pediatric health care, now in Milan.
Thread in Italian, but explicit about collapsing, overwhelmed pediatric healthcare (family doctors, hospitals) in Lombardy, Italy, with particular regard to the metropolis of Milan. Sadly eerie of other, similar health crises across the world
Here we go. Our kids have damaged immune systems.
Another child has died from Strep A: this time in west London: another kid is in hospital with it: this is really bad. Really, really bad.. H/T @alastairdick…

DUDE. One of Biden's *first acts* as POTUS was to end the Federal use of private prisons. They've yanked 160,000 inmates from for-profit facilities and as of yesterday there are ZERO left. Huge. Progress. For. Justice.
New today: Federal Bureau of Prisons says it is no longer housing it’s nearly 160k inmates in privately owned prisons, ending contracts with the private prisons pursuant to Biden’s 2021 AM executive order.

Let's be real about this. "We are just beginning to understand the diversity of the peripheral T cell compartment, which arises from the specialization of different T cell subsets and the plasticity of individual naive T cells to adopt different fates."…
"...identified human naive, memory and effector T cell subsets on the basis of the combinatorial expression of CD27 and CD45RA, with naive cells expressing both molecules, and memory and effector cells expressing only CD27 or CD45RA, respectively."

Groundbreaking research from 2019 shows how Strep a bacteria hides from the immune system: Strep A has been studied for decades and only in 2019 did they find this out: it shows that we know very little about how these pathogens work

What is RaTG13? Look here.
Replying to @stevenemassey
RaTG13 is the closest related genome to SARS2 and was published early in the pandemic by the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). A major difference between the two viruses is that SARS2 has a furin cleavage site (FCS), critical for its pandemic potential

👀👇 "Due to its multidrug-resistant nature and easy transmissibility, CA is difficult to manage in COVID-positive patients. Patients w comorbidities, immunosuppressive states, intubated and on ventilators are more likely to contract the fungal infection."
Briefly scanned the literature.… There was one meta-analysis reporting 5.7% Candida Auris cases among Covid patients in critical care, of which 67% died. Data wasn't sufficient to analyze statistical interaction effects between Covid and Candida Auris.
Not to brag, but more than once during the warm summer months I've taken solo moonlit night-hikes in nearby Wildcat Canyon. The coyotes there kept me company. Good times.
