for an explicit example of how the Intangible Sludge has become standardized, look no further than a season 1 dexter screencap & a dexter: new blood screencap (pls do not @ me with "but he's not in miami anymore")

Why has this look become so standardized? It hurts my eyes and brain.

digital cameras with insane dynamic range + LED light + fix it in post. These things arent inherently bad but its made a lot of people, especially younger DPs sloppy. Haze the room out, shoot it in LOG, end up liking the LOG look, forget to add the colors back in. Sludge

along the way people got the impression that cinematography is when you can see everything at the same exposure level and when the screen is the same color

you hit the nail on the fucking head. finally someone who can articulate it in technical terms!

Is this why it's become increasingly difficult for phone cams to take good moon pictures despite being technically better?
1
no it's more that they actually aren't technically better. With phone cameras no matter what they do you're always still limited by sensor size and lenses. For a good moon shot you need a very long lens

I just don't buy that the entire industry is "forgetting" to add colors back in. This is a choice

its not the entire industry though, its more a certain kind of production
I often see such "piss filter" in concepts, can't say it looks odd to me, but never thought about such explanation where that all started, kind of make sense.
The ability to more easily color grade shots has to have a major role too. That said, it seems like a weird counter that completely cancels out the benefits for HDR beyond just less banding.
