- @RishiSunak's #WindfallTax is only temporary relief on soaring energy bills and does nothing to improve the UK’s leaky homes, while encouraging oil and gas companies into more production, climate campaigners say #energy Story by @fionaharvey theguardian.com/business/202…

Can't quite believe what I'm reading 👀 The Govt really does say rebate on #windfalltax only applies if energy companies extract *more* oil & gas Bone-headedly stupid, even by this Govt's standards, to be incentivising climate-wrecking fossil fuels #keepitintheground

"The glaring omission from @RishiSunak was a lack of a plan for home insulation ... all estimates show gas prices will be high for years to come, so investing in insulation makes the best long-term use of taxpayers money" says @jessralston2 @ECIU_UK #energy

Isabella O'Dowd, at @wwf_uk "While a windfall tax for the biggest greenhouse gas polluters is welcome and well overdue, it's nonsensical to then siphon profits into an investment allowance that supports domestic gas and oil extraction" #energy #costofliving
Is this windfall tax investment relief a fossil fuel subsidy in disguise? You tell me – but as @timbolord says, it's an awkward question in context of COP26 (and earlier) commitments on fossil fuel subsidy phaseout…

So UK oil and gas companies are going to be hit with a windfall tax, which they can largely avoid by increasing investment… …as long as they invest in "UK extraction" of more fossil fuels
🔥⛽️⛽️⛽️🔥 UK oil and gas windfall tax (sorry, "energy profits levy") It's a 25 percentage pt incr in existing tax rate on the sector (from 40 to 65%), with relief for increased investment Crucially, relief only covers "UK extraction" (ie fossil fuels) gov.uk/government/publicatio…

And here's the new investment allowance. Happens at the point of investment in a new field - not at the point that field starts producing But only appears to reward investment in oil and gas ("UK extraction")... not in low-carbon energy, where BP & Shell planning most investment
