I haven’t changed it professionally yet, because what a pain, but I’m starting to go by Emily St. James on a personal basis. I don’t think of Emily VanDerWerff as a “dead name” or anything. If you call me that, I won’t be offended. But I need a new last name. So now you know!

In the abstract, Stranger Things S4 had some really cool ideas, even if it occasionally had to plot stall to get there. In practice, those cool ideas were hidden amid roughly ELEVEN HOURS of plot stall.

It really hit me when the finale was built around a relationship that is a.) more compelling than almost any other relationship on the show and b.) barely featured in S4 to that point.

The four boys who were the center of the show in S1 are kind of vestigial organs at this point, as the mythology becomes more of the series’ focus. Like Dustin has sort of become the Pauley Perrette of this show, because he can exist in both worlds, but the other kids? Stranded.

I repeat my belief that S4 should have been 16 45-minute episodes and cost maybe a third as much. The spectacle really doesn’t add anything to the season. The highlights are all interpersonal scenes.

Long-form TV is about relationships, and you ignore that at your peril.

(My other global note for S4 is that Eleven should have been one of the popular girls in California, so she had something to lose when her responsibilities came calling. She’s the protagonist! Shake up her status quo!)

I think too many guys who write television miss the dramatic potential of weird, over-cranked, much too dramatic, not quite romantic but also not NOT romantic teen girl friendships.

This is how you write about trans people’s DIY expertise—it simply commands respect! (Also thank you to Io for letting me sing the praises of the humble orchiectomy, including a pull quote about my own, in print.) independent.co.uk/news/world…

Every day, I log into Twitter with one specific purpose, and today's specific purpose is: I need to tell you that Barbra Streisand's cover of "Life on Mars" is so good.

Things the algorithms know about me, as of June 2022: --I am pregnant --I need a holster for my gun --I like cookies One of these is true.

I click on every fucking ad for some, like, cookie bakery in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where every cookie is handmade by an Amish grandmother, who then wraps it in wax paper and writes your name on it, and the algorithm knows it, and I'm GLAD it knows it. I WANT COOKIES.

This is what I mean when I say the trans athlete debate is really about male fragility. These men are convinced that Lia Thomas simply being born male means Thomas will “smoke” the greatest female swimmer in history. Their times are not close in the slightest.

(In addition to J.K. Rowling’s whole deal, I find “what’s your Hogwarts house” a lazy character development shortcut that tells me nothing, unless it’s intentionally used to indicate a character thinks “What’s your Hogwarts house” is useful info, which IS character development.)

Just want more books where the girl is obsessed with Jane Austen, then freaks out with joy when she realizes she’s trapped in a Jane Austen plot, maybe sabotages her budding relationship in the process, just thinking out loud here.

Liz: So I’m a free spirit from a large family, and you’re kind of uptight and snobby, but it’s obvious we have chemistry. You realize what this is, right? Dara: Do not say it. I will leave this date right now. Liz: BUT YOU REALIZE, RIGHT?

Look, I’m not a great resource on this. I write a podcast where the f/f ship is the canon pairing, and I didn’t realize they were Beatrice and Benedick from Much Ado About Nothing until, like, season two.
