In two days we’ve had reports of Draghi telling the central bank governor to resign, and telling the founder of a political party in his coalition to get rid of its leader. Draghi denied the central bank governor thing (but didn’t urge him to stay on).

Nothing to see here. Just a "technocratic" PM that can only govern via confidence votes, despite his huge majority, and tries to replace the leaders of the parties supporting him.

Now his office has just denied the other thing too, about asking Grillo to get rid of Conte. Bit late off the mark, but they’ve denied it

BRIEF THREAD ON THE DISGRACEFUL TAXI SITUATION AT ROME’S CIAMPINO AIRPORT: Yesterday evening I arrived late at Ciampino from London. You come out of the airport and there is nowhere obvious to queue for a taxi. People just mill around in various groups, hoping that one of

the numerous taxis parked nearby will come to collect them. Most of the taxis have the “taxi” light turned off so it’s not clear if they’re working or not and you have to ask the drivers. Instead of answering yes or no, they ask you where you want to go. If that corresponds

to where THEY want to go, they’ll take you. If not, they won’t. If you don’t speak Italian and so have no idea how much a ride should cost, they are more likely to take you. I live in Rome, and asked a driver if he’d take me home. He said no, so I waited around looking

for another. He later came back and said he’d take me for 40 euros. The ride should cost 20 at most. I said no, and asked around a bit more. Eventually one said he’d take me home for 25 euros. I hopped in to find 3 other people in the taxi, with whom he’d made similar

arrangements. So that was at least 25 euros from each of us, giving him a probable take of about 100 euros. He never turned the metre on, of course. This was the scene at about 11:30 pm. During the day it works a bit better. But this has been the situation at Ciampino

for years. Fiumicino is better. Ciampino is notorious, but it never changes, which to me suggests the drivers must have the complicity of the local authorities, possibly even the police. So if you have a flight to Ciampino, especially a late one, just be prepared!

Italian newspaper @ilfoglio_it reports PM Draghi wants to replace the heads of the central bank and state firms early, to prevent the risk of a future populist government naming their successors. Draghi and the Bank of Italy half-heartedly deny it @Reuters reuters.com/business/finance…

Nice to be back in London for the first time in years. (pre-Covid) even though all the trains are delayed or canceled coz of the strikes. Got a bit of a 1970s feel about it, so makes me feel more at home!
