My 5yo’s answer to the ownership question in computational creativity: he collaborated with his drawing robot (Artie 3000) to make this art book.

Doctor: You know that idyllic movie scenario where people recover by resting in bed for a month in the countryside? Me: I’m supposed to go back to work on Monday. Doctor: *laughs* Me: No? Doctor: Maybe you will? Probably you won’t.

Academia runs on volunteer labor. Religious institutions run on volunteer labor. Gaming runs on volunteer labor. Political activism runs on volunteer labor. All community runs on volunteer labor. Burn out the volunteers, and you burn out society.

My doctor says I need to rest at home for the next week and a half. I am not good at rest. Tell me the things you do (not Netflix) to rest. P.S. If you are a work person waiting for me for something, see above. No more work for me before Thanksgiving.

Admin: Faculty say they want professional development, but then no one shows up. Me, faculty developer: They’re drowning in committee, administrative, and assessment work. What they need is time. Admin: Let’s do a survey and see what topics they want.

Thanks to a generous grant from @cziscience with @igraph2, my lab is hiring TWO new members! I'm looking for a postdoc and a lab manager to help develop resources to recruit and retain women, trans and nonbinary scientists in Network Science. Please share! @WiNS_Society @NUnetsi

Hey twitter bot folks, I’m passing along a hopeful question from my AI course students that I have no answer to: Tell us about a time where a twitter bot ended up being unexpectedly *benevolent* instead of unexpectedly terrible?

Those of us who were once all-star volunteers, colleagues, parents, and citizens have been reduced to exhausted shadows of our earlier selves, and I'd love to talk more about it.
Warning, earnestness ahead: I feel like so many—all—of us are trying to do things that matter but also just trying to GET BY. There are a million ways I’m so fortunate but also I’m tired & don’t know what’s going unstick my feeling of stuckness these days. Solidarity, friends. ❤️

Pro tip for parents of little kids who love to “help” with the chores: make sure they didn’t “helpfully” put their disposable pull-up in the laundry pile *before* you run the washer.

My son will readily agree to pick up for the robot vacuum but not for me manually vacuuming. Why? Because the robot merely destroys without mercy along an unpredictable path, while I can be reasonably expected to not vacuum straight into his favorite things.

This is huge! Student fees for grad students are a problem because they aren't covered by tuition waivers that come with grant funding or TA positions, meaning they essentially are pay cuts when they're increased. This is excellent news; I hope other universities do the same.
Replying to @ucwcolorado
Second, CU Boulder announced a fee waiver for grad workers, the demand that our graduate student members have fought tooth and nail for over the past 3 years. This is effectively a $1500-2000 raise, and will drastically improve the financial burden faced by grads.

It’s not that it’s wrong exactly to say that “violent interactions” are simple or feel good, it’s just… if you make anything the focus of any field it becomes easier to do and we get better at doing it.

A long and difficult week, and covid booster shot side effects, and extra-tired kiddos means today is (at the 5yo’s request) the first watch of Muppet Christmas Carol for the season.
