This tweet shows the issue for Boris Johnson today. People were being removed from the delivery room just after their partners gave birth because of rules set in No10. They're now being told that the PM at the time thought leaving drinks were *essential*
Ah yes, November 2020, when I wasn’t allowed to accompany my pregnant wife to any prenatal scans/appointments, and when my daughter was born I was ushered out of the hospital after an hour because I wasn’t allowed onto the ward. But Boris says a leaving do was essential. Got it.

Troubled by this. I might be over-calling it, but I don’t think so. You would never choose to deploy for this long unless it was a fully supported, and rotated trip in which case, no real need to thank the families. A deployment this long suggests.../1
Honoured to welcome home HMS A…after 403 days deployed delivering on operations with our @NATO allies. Thank you, to you and your families, you have been superb. @fightingsailor @pinstripedline @RNRMC @VAdmAndrewBurns

Riddle me this… @RishiSunak’s updated defence & security review says the threat from Russia + challenge from China are growing & we face a “difficult & dangerous decade”. Yet the rate of increase in extra cash for defence (£5bn over 2yrs then £6bn over 3yrs) shrinks over time 🤨

The Chancellor has pledged an extra £11bn for @DefenceHQ over 5 years. It's hard to know what to make of that without more detail but it's a lower overall rate of increase than the PM's initial £5bn over 2yrs announcement on Monday despite growing Russia threats/China challenges

NEW: The UK’s military chief @AdmTonyRadakin_ did not - when asked - rule out further cuts to the armed forces even as he welcomed an extra £5 billion for defence over the next two years. 1/

Admiral Sir Tony Radakin also underlined the importance of a new pledge by HMG to lift defence spending to 2.5% of GDP from just over 2% - even though it didn't come with a timeframe. He said if it is reached within 10 years this would equate to an extra £100bn. 2/

However, asked if he could rule out more cuts to the military, @AdmTonyRadakin_ said: “We might decide that we really want to focus on some particular capabilities. And inevitably, you might pare back in some other areas, but this is about continued investment in UK defence.” 3/3

Publicly @DefenceHQ says it’s delighted with an extra £5bn from @RishiSunak - but privately the mood is dire. One source says investing in submarines that enter service years from now while not fixing the army is an “eccentric response” to war in Europe ⬇️ bit.ly/42brIOt

Touchingly naive, this. And certainly not the approach ever taken by the Treasury under Sunak or any other chancellor. "Here's £5bn, pick whichever ships you like."

This (nearly) £5bn defence spending pledge by @RishiSunak only = £1.9bn over 2 years for conventional military as £3bn will go on the "nuclear enterprise" (submarines/warheads). Sources say the @BritishArmy alone needs an extra £3bn a year to avoid cuts... bit.ly/3YIIwth
