As he arrived near his home he was alarmed to discover that a group of Eritrea|n soldiers were proceeding house to house. They had rounded up 7 children, including 2 of Priest Hiwot’s own sons. Priest Hiwot was spotted by the troops & he was asked to join the group. /2 @stejobin

Priest Hiwot is remembered for his regular church services, his kindness, his helpfulness, the way he skillfully mediated conflicts and how he was personally dedicated to helping the poor in his own community. He was “a wonderful servant of the church.” /5 @CIJ_ICJ @melaniejoly

Priest Hiwot’s father and mother are alive and are described as “suffering from their son's death.” Tomorrow marks the 1 year anniversary of the #DengelatMassacre. 160 empty seats in homes and holes in hearts. /6 @flafontaine @RightsGAC @CanadaUN @CanadaEthiopia @MichaelChongMP

160 people were killed at the Maryam Dengelat Massacre solely because of their Tigrayan identity. Academics at Ghent University have with limited access to Tigray already identified 160 massacre sites like those in Axum, Bora, Irob, Adigrat etc. /7 @kettynivyabandi @KarimKhanQC

I hope many of us will be able to surround the grieving in Tigray soon, sit and walk with them to let them know they aren’t alone. May we steadfastly pursue justice & accountability. Remember and esteem the lives of those lost. /8 #JusticeMatters #TigrayGenocide #CallItAGenocide
