25 Oct. 1939: "Operation Tannenberg", German program of elimination of prominent Poles in the captured territories, claims new victims. One of them is former Poznań mayor Mikołaj Kiedacz, murdered in Fort VII, where the Germans set up a concentration and extermination facility.

Grażyna Langowska - under communist rule a dissident, member of "Solidarity" and, throughout her life, committed teacher - was commemorated today with a plaque unveiled in Olsztyn regional administrative building.

After the unveiling, leading Polish educators - in the country and abroad, teaching patriotism in the "Solidarity" era and now - received the Grażyna Langowska Award. PM Mateusz Morawiecki, Deputy PM Jarosław Kaczyński, and the IPN President Karol Nawrocki took part in the event.

In #September1939 Gen. #Maczek commanded the only fully operational motorized Polish unit, the 10th Motorized Cavalry Brigade. Its veterans fled to France and formed the nucleus of the 10th Armoured Cavalry Brigade, later transformed into the 1st Armoured Division. #WW2

#OTD in 1940, Gen. #Sikorski established a special war badge for #Maczek’s soldiers, a black shoulder strap. The Black Brigade fought during the French Campaign and later in Great Britain was reorganized into the 1st Armoured Division. In 1944 the unit was deployed in Normandy.

On 25 Oct. 1924, the ashes of Henryk Sienkiewicz, one the most renowned and loved Polish authors, were brought to Warsaw from Switzerland, where the writer died in 1916. The Nobel Prize winner was laid to rest in St. John Archcathedral, next to Polish statesmen and archbishops.

Ciechanów train station was just named after Lt. Roman Dziemieszkiewicz, soldier of the anti-communist underground killed by the Red Army servicemen near that very station in October 1945. Deputy President Krzysztof Szwagrzyk represented the IPN at the ceremony.

On 24 October 1956 in Warsaw, huge crowds listened to Władysław Gomułka with high hopes - the new First Secretary of the communist party had spent the darkest years of Stalinism in prison, had nothing to do with the Poznań June massacre, and promised to liberalize the system.

Liberalize the system he did - releasing political prisoners, curbing the security services, abandoning collectivization and limiting the army subordination to the Soviets - but wouldn't hear of questioning the leading role of the communist party, and showed it in 1968 and 1970.

War hero, film maker and adventurer – all rolled into one – that was Merian Cooper, born #OTD in 🗓 1893. He was an American airman, who volunteered for the #PolishArmy. He established Polish 7 Air Escadrille and fought in the #PolishSoviet war.

He was the only Polish soldier who during #WW2 fought against the Japanese in the air. Witold #Urbanowicz volunteered to join the legendary #FlyingTigers fighter group. #OTD in 🗓 1943 he was assigned to 75th Squadron. While with the unit, he shot down two Japanese planes.

More executions within #OperationTannenberg took place 82 years ago. The victims were from the towns of Kościan and Śmigiel. SS-Sturmbannführer Gerhard Flesch, responsible for the killings, was executed in 1948 for crimes against Norwegian resistance fighters.

On 22 October 1914, an underground armed force working towards Polish independence against Russia - and then also against Germany - was named Polish Military Organization. After 1918, many of its members became the core of the reconstructed Polish Army.
