Not any kind of surprise, but shocking of course..
BREAKING NEWS: A new report by The @WildlifeTrusts published today reveals that #HS2 Ltd have massively miscalculated the damage they are doing to nature and overvalued the amount of good that their remediation works will do. Read the full story here: bbowt.org.uk/news/hs2-got-it…
A Mischief of Magpies plotting their next move... There were more in this group, but they wouldn't all fit in the photo! #NotBreedingSeasonYet #WinterSun #BlueSky #OX3

Great morning in the Lye Valley today with Song Thrush singing, Great Spotted Woodpecker drumming, and Muntjac barking. Best of all, after a couple of hours of patient negotiation, this Buzzard (Buteo buteo) finally agreed to pose for a photo.😃 #BirdsSeenIn2023 #SoundsOfSpring

Alkaline fens are exceptionally biodiverse habitats. We supported this opposition, led by @RaleighParkOx, and we're delighted that the proposed housing development is NOT going ahead. It's a very good example of what's possible if people work together and speak out for nature.
See my blog post about our work to safeguard the irreplaceable fen at Raleigh Park. I regret there's no photo. But the various concerned organisations in this community worked together to oppose the planning application, and planning committee agreed: cllrdebbyhallett.com/2023/01…

This made me laugh, but actually the situation is deadly serious for wildlife under threat by poor ecological surveys paid for by developers...

A little late to the party maybe, but the tiny female Hazel (Corylus avellana) flowers are just starting to open both here in the Valley, and at Rock Edge. 😍 #SignsOfSpring #WildflowerHour #OX3 #LocalNatureReserve

Tree planting can deprive a site of groundwater. Crucial loss in the rain catchment area of a groundwater-dependent wetland e.g. a spring-fen. Trees block rain hitting grd & it evaps off lvs. Rain that gets to ground is absorbed by roots, sucked up & lost frm lvs by transpiration
Interesting article by @Love_plants on why tickbox tree planting can be actually harmful Absorption of desperately needed groundwater for fen habitats not mentioned: plantlife.org.uk/uk/blog/too…

The hard work of repairing and rebuilding the #LeakyDams in the Lye Brook continues. We aim to #SlowTheFlow during peak flow events caused by the storm drain at the head of the Valley and so reduce damage to the soft #peat banks. #OxfordshireFens #OX3

We've got the largest population of Maidenhair Pocket-moss (Fissidens adianthoides) in Oxon. Sadly it seems to have mostly stopped producing spores, and is stuck in an area of fen which is slowly drying out. So, we've dug some up, and replanted it in a wetter area. #Bryophytes

W really wish our Elves would clear up after themselves when they've finished drinking the morning dew. We found loads of their Scarlet Elf Cups (Sarcoscypha austriaca) just left on this old log in the fen this morning! #Fungi #OxfordshireFens #Myths #WildOxford #OX3

If only all Oxon fens in restoration could have cutting combined with light stock grazing like this...

Raleigh park calcareous spring-fen areas in restoration with @ODS @PondRiverStream & @RaleighParkOx. Now safer with potentially damaging housing nearby not going to happen.

Many thanks to Debby for coordinating this, and to @judyweb32049878 @at_bows @vickytryfan @PondRiverStream for writing brilliant responses and working so hard to regenerate the fen with our excellent volunteers! Teamwork at many levels!

An exciting #beetle find near Old Marston near to coming development sites. Another situation where offsite impacts on nearby biodiversity could be large, unappreciated and no compensation planned..
Great but sobering to visit Burnt Mill Meadow LWS w/ brilliant @judyweb32049878 Once part of a network of traditional floodplain meadows, now precariously perched among development, built & planned. Rare species will suffer eg Greater Water-parsnip & Rugged Oil Beetle (new site!)

We spent some time this week translocating more Long-stalked Yellow-sedge (Carex lepidocarpa. Scarce in Oxon, it now mostly survives in nature reserves and SSSIs like ours with suitable management.
