I'd never even heard of them until we got one. They are extremely loyal and loving.

My googling this morning has turned up a couple of interesting nuggets about Brittany Spaniels - 1. They are the national dog of France, and 2. They have more in common genetically with a pointer or setter than with a spaniel. You learn something new every day!

Yes, they are larger dogs often used for hunting in France and Spain and consequently often kept in cages outside and often abandoned when they have served their purpose. This is a crying shame given that they are extremely sensitive creatures.

Yup, exactly that. When I lived in the Var, in the countryside outside a village, there were several dog pounds full of these and other hunting hounds, shut up for six months of the year, bereft of human attention and howling at every passing wild boar.

Oh, I couldn't bear that. Some of the stories on the FB page I linked to are awful. Hunters also claim it's necessary to dock the tails, which is another horror. Here's our Luna.

And here's my beloved, late-lamented Lolita, rescued from a local hotel when we lived in the Var. She was a pointer cross (crossed with what we were never sure!).

Lovely! Was it a long time ago? It's so hard because they really worm their way into your heart. x
