It reminded me of a lot of man on the street interviews at the start of the Iraq war. Like the US was forced to go in, defensively, to protect itself from a horrible axis of evil that had it surrounded. It's weird that some against that war now support russia doing even worse.

It was only until they moved to the West that they learned the truth. As others have pointed out, the purpose and objectives of Russia's invasion are hazy. Russia can just declare themselves victorious in *whatever* because "nothing is true and everything is possible".

It seems hard to believe, but I personally know educated Russians who grew up thinking that Russia alone fought against the Nazis in WWII and that Britain and US were on the side of the Nazis. And they had never heard of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact (of course).

Watching interviews from the street in Moscow you see people convinced that someone invaded Russia and not the other way around. This remarkable cognitive dissonance is the very reason that Peter Pomerantsev named his book "Nothing is true and everything is possible".

A year ago Irpin was liberated in the final days of the Battle for Kyiv russian troops were on the run and the farther they retreated - the easier it was for me to breathe It was 3 days before the whole world learned the word ‘Bucha’

I mean WHAT. There was never a time when camp men and drag queens were NOT on teatime British tv. 🙄 ‘Pale, male and stale’ execs - that displays *hilarious* ignorance of the historic tv industry.

Fascinating that Patrick Strudwick in The i has no understanding of British culture, history, and comedy in general or indeed of gay British culture, history and comedy in particular.

Remember the russian soldier Pavel who was granted asylum in France and wrote a book? He confessed to executing Ukrainian civilians. Only after receiving his paycheck for the book

The last bit isn't really true, though. Israel is tolerant of LGBTs relative to the rest of the Middle East - not hard - but still doesn't have marriage equality, and is unlikely to for as long as legal marriage remains in religious hands (i.e. for the foreseeable future).
finally Netanyahu, "Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East" reassures protections for minorities, names Arabs, and LGBTQ, "Israeli Arabs sit on the Supreme Court…one of the most progressive countries in the world when it comes to LGBTQ rights" #DemocracySummit

Tigray and Somaliland being there shows just how deep the brain rot goes. US literally backs both Ethiopia and Somalia's claims

Dear @wanuri @StephanieAllain @TraceeEllisRoss @levelforwardinc @abigaildisney I appreciate your former interest and hard work on making VOX into a feature film. One question: Was it necessary to turn my lesbian character into a man who identifies as ‘trans’ in the screenplay?… nitter.fdn.fr/i/web/status/164…

I think often about Malcolm Caldwell, the SOAS lecturer who loved the Khmer Rouge, shilled for Pol Pot, and denied the Cambodian genocide ... and who on travelling to Cambodia was summarily executed by the regime he so admired

Hard to judge the physical & mental toll this defence has taken on Ukrainian soldiers, likely enormous. But if that's all the big Russian winter (we're in April this week) offensive accomplishes... man, vibes in Russian telegram channels must be at the bottom of the ocean.
Hey remember the marvellous winter russian offensive

I wonder if Northern Ireland in the 1950s was the safest society there has ever been in human history. In two years it recorded zero murders, in a province of 1.4 million people, including a large industrial city

It’s really weird when people say the media only doorstep Corbyn - the only possible way you could believe that is if you don’t watch the news. Pre-Brexit I spent so much time camped out of Michael Gove’s house for a broadcaster that Sarah Vine screamed in my face to piss off 🤷🏽‍♂️

A reference to this tweet it seems
"First, her feet were plunged into hot water and her toenails clipped short. Then the feet were massaged and oiled before all the toes, except the big toes, were broken and bound flat against the sole, making a triangle shape.
