This line-up of scholars, writers, thinkers, poets, are among the best that this nation has to offer. A book by and for the descendants of a people for whom it was once illegal to read and write. A testimony. The embodiment of so many dreams deferred, but never quelled. Nov. 16.

UPDATE: Lawyer for Bright Sheng, the composer who caused an uproar when he showed the 1965 Olivier blackface "Othello" in class, says U of Michigan informed him it will not undertake an investigation "into his curricular choices." My story from last week: nytimes.com/2021/10/15/arts/…

That’s a big miss & needs attention. The Medium piece by a student describes a pattern that doesn’t make it surprising that he would be so glib about a colleague’s work. But it makes his teaching failures more troubling. He acted like he had never heard of blackface as a problem

Unfortunately story missed how Sheng managed to ignore all these years the scholarship on blackness and opera from his Black woman colleague Professor Naomi Andre.

This is not the first time this week that I have been frustrated at how scholars refuse to learn from others (or to be more specific, from experts in structural racism in the humanities and interpretive social sciences) AT THEIR OWN INSTITUTION. Academia is often so provincial.
Insensitive?! The professor’s error included his failure to be acquainted with the state-of-the-field, including the work of his @umich colleague (!) Naomi Andre a specialist of blackness, blackface and opera. How did he manage to overlook her important work for all these years?!
