More than half of the 6,200 migrants returned to #Libya this year by the #EU backed coastguard have gone missing. Many ended up in shadowy government detention centers, beyond the reach of U.N agencies. My long read for @newhumanitarian thenewhumanitarian.org/news-…

We demonstrated today in Berlin against the new Israeli gov. Honestly, I don't like protesting as a Jew. But in Germany, where the establishment lumps together Jewishness, Zionism and the Israeli policies of occupation and apartheid, it's important to do it nevertheless.

With dismissive and insensitive attitudes like this, how can we really take claims serious that critiquing Qatar for its terrible labor rights record is racist? What's really racist is the refusal of Qatari authorities to subscribe equal value to vulnerable migrant workers.
“We are in the middle of a World Cup and we have a successful World Cup and this is something you want to talk about right now?” World Cup chief executive Nasser al-Khater asked reporters. “It's strange this is something you wanted to focus on,” he added middleeasteye.net/news/qatar…

Yes, exactly. A triumph of misplaced hope. Really, nothing changes except for armed groups, the military and their patrons now having civilian allies. A triumph of willful ignorance.
My latest on #Sudan at @MEMRIReports, the new political framework agreement is, once again in Khartoum, a triumph of long drawn-out "process" over actual results which is like a second marriage, "a triumph of hope over experience." memri.org/reports/once-again…

Over 40 protesters in #Sudan were injured on Monday *after* the political framework deal was signed. Dozens more today. This only further undermines the prospect of building broader support from the pro-democracy movement for a compromise deal.
1/Medical sources: 49 injured in today’s protests. Witnesses from last days protests told me about the increasing pattern of unlawfully shooting tear gas canisters on body, esp heads, as well throwing glass and stones from teargas guns

I've been banging the drum about this book since the moment I heard @sallyhayd was writing it - it is, without question, the most important work published in Europe this year. If you haven't read it, do so now.

single serious concession made by the military in the last 30 years that hasnt come from overwhelming pressure (military, diplomatic, financial, social) that called into question the regime's survival. They have not faced that kind of pressure in the political talks and this

Excellent thread on the status quo after the December 5th deal. There's a lot of functional amnesia around this deal: the governing logics of #Sudan, more-readily acknowledged around the 2019 deal are today forgotten in favour of institutional idealism masquerading as pragmatism.
Great piece on the political agreement signed in Sudan. Some v quick thoughts on where we are🧵

The paradox among optimists of #Sudan's agreement is they say this is the best that can be achieved but hope the military will make existential concessions in phase 2. But the military only accepted this deal because it bet that it can permanently delay making those concessions.

Easy. You have to love big brother.
A rather curious ‘contest’ wherein students were invited to share their conceptions of what constitutes a good (Emirati) citizen. Because this was a contest, the message of ‘winning’ presentations are quite telling. 1/ thenationalnews.com/lifestyl…
