It’s 2023 and the UK is unable to run train services between its main cities.🤷🏻‍♂️ They simply can’t be allowed to keep on ruining people’s weekends like this.
Due to high staff shortages, we are unfortunately expecting a large number of cancellations on Saturday 28 January. Trains are likely to be extremely busy, and passengers should check their journey before coming to the station here: avantiwestcoast.co.uk/travel…

I'm grateful to the Prime Minister for referring Mr Zahawi's actions to Sir Laurie Magnus. I have asked him to confirm that Sir Laurie's remit will not be limited to tax, but will also cover the conflict of interest and the manner in which Mr Zahawi responded to the allegations.

This will be my last Zahawi update for a while. After trying to push this story for six months, it now has plenty of life of its own. A swathe of brilliant journalists are on the case, and I can take a step back. What happens next is politics, not tax law.

Superb piece from ⁦@GordonBrown⁩ in today’s Guardian, warning of the risks posed by the Conservatives of a two-tier health system. Mark my words: this will be the end of the NHS if the Tories have their way | Gordon Brown theguardian.com/commentisfre…

Quick note to people reporting on Zahawi. If he did fail to pay £3.7m capital gains tax, that likely means he failed to report receiving ***£27m***. He presumably claimed this was merely “careless” (and so not tax fraud). How plausible is that?

When Zahawi’s lawyers threatened me, I was a senior tax lawyer with financial resources and legal and media contacts. He threatened other people who didn’t have those advantages (I know of at least three):

For years Mr Zahawi has it seems been sending out lots of SLAPP letters which had scared off anyone putting stuff in the public domain for the last 9 years. Thankfully @DanNeidle put enough of the bits together to overcome the SLAPP. Here are my letters from Mr Zahawi 2013 team.

The £5m settlement Zahawi has reached with HMRC includes a penalty of around £1.3m for non payment of capital gains tax on his sale of shares in YouGov. Considering he was once chancellor in charge of the UK's tax system the best course of action for him now is to resign
