Would be fun if the baseline was set at a quarter meridian. That way it animates both ways, the equator countries get to grow while the others shrink.

Mariners don’t. They love it, bc it is perfect for navigation. There are people without any historical or navigational knowledge that think it’s a projection of western superiority.

Great animation. It's amazing how small Canada, Greenland and Russia actually are without the mercator projection.

India and USA looking almost same in size now, but its like USA (3.79) = 3 x India (1.26) in area. (unit: million mi2).

"lied to" is a bit much - they are map-projections, and since there's no way to show a true map (Imagine flattening a rounded orange-peel into a perfect rectangle. Can't be done), some projections become more used than others. Mercator is a commonly used one.
