1. Today, I'm launching my new publication, The Informant, with a story unlike any I've reported on before. It involves neo-Nazis, a terrified family with a newborn baby, and a case of mistaken identity. A thread. 👇 informant.news/p/the-wrong-h…

This thread makes a pretty convincing case that Gabriel Chase, a former acolyte of white nationalist Nick Fuentes, assaulted police and engaged in property destruction inside the US Capitol on J6. That's a lot more than was previously known publicly.
Remember all the "gr0ypers" who showed up to J6, and then continued their Nick Fuentes-worshiping habits? Let's take a closer look at one of them Welcome to the sunlight, apparent pepper spray enthusiast Gabriel Warren Chase aka "Warren" aka #BlackAdidasBrat of Gainesville, FL!

I deleted the tweet shown in this screenshot because I got a detail wrong. Chase was charged with four misdemeanors, not three. I'll post a corrected tweet to follow.

Gabriel Chase was one of several people who broke away from Fuentes in late 2021. Then in September, federal prosecutors charged him with four misdemeanors for the J6 riot. It now appears prosecutors are ready to give him a deal in which he pleads guilty to just one of those.

OK, I really didn't intend to tweet anything this morning. Media across the globe are now covering the Monterey Park shooting, and a lot of journalists are there at the scene. So I'm going to log off for now to get some rest.

For folks turning to Twitter for information on the shooting in Monterey Park, California: - Early reports are often wrong - Police scanner audio is often wrong - Be wary of hoaxes - It could take hours or days to establish a motive

To show how early information is often wrong or incomplete in breaking situations: AP and the Washington Post have differing casualty counts in Monterey Park. AP, 9 killed: apnews.com/article/los-angel… WaPo, 9 shot, several hospitalized, no confirmed deaths: washingtonpost.com/nation/20…

Here’s a short story. I called this number and I’m still here. That’s all. With love to everyone going through it. Just try to hang on for today.

In the US, there’s immediate help for anyone through the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Its new three-digit number to call is simple: 988. The old number for the lifeline still works too: 1-800-273-8255 (4/8) 988lifeline.org/

I’m very sad to learn about the death of NYT journalist Blake Hounshell. He first reached out to me when he was at Politico and made a couple of attempts to bring me on board there as an editor. It didn’t work out, but we remained in touch, and he was always kind to me. (1/8)

Blake's impact on the world and the journalism industry is significant. I'm sure a lot will be written about those things by people who knew him better than I did. In the meantime, let’s talk about suicide prevention because there is hope and help available. (2/8)

Blake’s family indicated he died by suicide. So I want to pass along some resources for anyone experiencing emotional distress or thoughts of suicide themselves. I’ll also include info specifically for journalists who are looking for help. (3/8)

For journalists in the US, this link has additional resources available to help you connect with therapists and get some financial help to pay for that. (6/8) jtsn.org/resources-for-journ…

Whether you’re experiencing a crisis or dealing with long-term stress or trauma, there is help available and things can get better. I know it’s really hard to take that first step, but believe me, you’re worth it. (8/8)
