The most worrying part of this article though is that the US was apparently keen to strike a deal with Putin to the detriment of Ukraine: 'the administration had signaled support for an eventual diplomatic deal on Ukraine that would give Putin much of what he wanted'

Of course he want to have the pretext. Everyone who starts a war needs a pretext so that the UN Charter Article 51 can be invoked (self defense clause). So did the US in Iraq 2003.
