Very good to see this reminder of how low the risks of Covid to small children are. The anxiety caused by mistaken beliefs to the contrary is a real social harm that I wish more of those spreading it would pause to consider…
Expert answers to some questions I have been getting! 1. Best guesstimate of vaccine availability for under 5s is 3-5 months. 2. Do NOT freak out about that CDC diabetes study. It is not a good or definitive study. nytimes.com/2022/01/15/opini…

Accusations of "both-sidesism" now often seem to function as a defence mechanism used by people who don't want to contemplate that their side might indeed be open to legitimate criticism…

Last week, two Supreme Court justices highlighted the country’s partisan-based self-deceptions on Covid. Many conservatives are dismissive of Covid. Many liberals are exaggerating its risks to children and the vaccinated. Both views are doing damage. nytimes.com/2022/01/14/brief… 🧵

It's annoying that he is still the Duke of York. York gets dragged into it *three* times in this short tweet + statement!

Took a required Covid travel test (it was negative) in a context where had it been positive, "isolating at home" would realistically have meant taking several trains for several hours. I always wonder about that

Wordle would be a great way to prime people with certain ideas that the authorities wanted lodged in your brain

"In hindsight, a lot of the restrictions we placed on outdoor activity were clearly not necessary or beneficial" would go a long way

Not to justify the No 10 parties obviously! Just in a vague nod to the fact that the outdoor restrictions were onerous and if we knew what we knew now, many wouldn't be imposed

Thank you to people letting me know about difficulties getting a hardcover copy of Four Thousand Weeks in the US at the moment! It's very frustrating but it *is* being worked on and should be sorted soon. In the meantime I recommend the ebook, or the audiobook read by some guy

4) This means that if no-one died from COVID at all, theoretically close to 75 daily deaths could still be reported in England, purely down to the huge infection rates. As it is, the seven day average is 160. So it’s possible almost half of the reported deaths are “incidental”.

In tweet #2 of the linked (and widely shared) megathread, he calls the idea that vaccines protect us a "comforting fairy tale". If you read down to about tweet #73, he concedes that the vaccines do, in fact, umm, protect us
Please, please do NOT buy into this. This thread - on the damage of COVID infection - has one purpose: to induce fear. It’s not good science or good public health messaging now that we have vaccines. Worst of all it’s outdated. Nearly every study cited is from pre-vaccines 💉

One of our most recommended book in 2021 was @oliverburkeman's Four Thousand Weeks. "It’s a book of ethics in the face of inevitable death. It’s a combination of sometimes witty, sometimes terrifying exploration of the human condition." @philosophybites fivebooks.com/book/four-thou…
