That plane is likely in one piece and largely intact. They must find it.

most VTOL aircraft barely have enough power to vertically take off and land empty. This was true of the Harrier and I believe still holds true for the F-35. also it's more fuel efficient to do a short take off and landing which is why most non US carriers have jump ramps.

You are correct the 35B only can use vtol short distances to move to another location where it can do a short takeoff. It can’t actually transition to forward flight from vtol, the harrier could but like you said couldn’t carry much
