Scientist with @Princeton's Program on Science & Global Security | Nuclear weapons, security and policy | 📖 TOXIQUE (with @TomasStatius, @editions_PUF, 2021)
There is a popular notion that the closer we are to nuclear disarmament the more stringent must be verification arrangements. This notion shapes most of the current work on disarmament verification. But should it? Our report unidir.org/VerifyTPNW takes a look. A thread 1/
Personal update: I have started a new position as visiting research scholar at @Princeton's Program on Science & Global Security. My @CarnegieEndow affiliation won't change. Look forward to working w/ new colleagues & reconnecting w/ old friends! Excited to share office w/ Frank!
I'm pretty pleased with my chapter in this UNDIR report, about the role of secrecy and verification under the TPNW. It was a really interesting question to look at closely, and took me into places that were quite novel for me. unidir.org/sites/default/fil…
On the train home from the #TPNW1MSP that I slowly realize the full extent of my contribution: In setting two deadlines (10 years for article 4.2 / 90 days for 4.4), member states directly used research findings from me and my colleague Zia Mian.
How cool is that... 🤓
We just presented a new @UNIDIR report at #TPNW1MSP. We looked at the power politics of nuclear disarmament verification, role of technical tools, secrecy, cooperation unidir.org/VerifyTPNW
1/ Here are some observations after the first day of the first meeting of the States Parties (1MSP) to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) in Vienna, Austria.
At #HINW22, @alxglaser presents the work of @seb6philippe and others involved in the Moruroa Files, which is an investigation of the real impacts of French nuclear tests in the Pacific. Exposure and harms were vastly undercounted. See moruroa-files.org for more details.
Presentation at #HINW2022 of @seb6philippe research on fallout from #nuclearweapons testing shows extensive ongoing humanitarian & environmental impact in the Pacific (Maohi Nui/Fr Polynesia, Marshall Is & Kiribati) & beyond #nuclearban#TPNW#TPNW1MSP
Together with my colleagues Zia Mian and Moritz @ohnemax Kütt I contributed to the fissile material section of #SIPRIYearbook. Here is the data as presented at IPFM @fissilematerial site fissilematerials.org/ (new format this year). It's a lot of weapon-usable stuff
Global nuclear arsenals are expected to grow as states continue to modernize — New #SIPRIYearbook out now.
