Dear anatomists and medical people, I took this thermal image of my feet and discovered my left middle toe is significantly warmer than my right middle toe. Why? Different vasculature/circulation? Is this asymmetry common in feet? Many thanks in advance!

You're very welcome Árpád... my original @TEDxQUT talk went into more detail about how to calculate those percentages. If you're interested, I'd recommend reading about "doubly-labelled water" (²H₂¹⁸O) studies. Ingenious, fascinating science invidious.fdn.fr/vuIlsN32WaE

Hi Árpád, your stoichiometry is👍but my calculation answers this question: When you burn 10kg of fat, how much of that 10kg becomes CO₂ and how much becomes H₂O? I'm separating the products into 1) the atoms that came from the fat and 2) the atoms that came from O₂

We kicked National Science Week off a bit early at Newmarket State School today with a preemptive science show, by me. Lots of excited little molecules buzzing around tonight. Thanks kids for being awesome and thank you teachers for your passion and enthusiasm.

Wow! The scientists in Professor Katherine Kedierska's @kedzierskalab lab are punching above their weight on understanding coronavirus. Congratulations and thanks to the whole team! abc.net.au/news/2020-03-17/r…

Good question. I eat meat🤫which causes more warming than eating plants because e.g. methane absorbs more infrared energy than CO₂. Emitting 1 CH₄ molecule is equivalent to emitting 25×CO₂. It's CO₂eq that matters not just the number of C atoms emitted bbc.com/news/science-environ…

While we're sharing, @ProfFeynman would have loved this @AtomicSchools video proving kids don't just love learning about atoms, they really "get it" too. Puts a little tear in your eye! invidious.fdn.fr/watch?v=FmVmwmwo…

Music to my eyes! Having my first @tedxqut talk quoted back to me while promoting my new TEDx. Very rewarding to see the message is spreading 🤓 invidious.fdn.fr/vuIlsN32WaE
Yes and the cool thing is, if you lose weight, you are losing it by exhalation. (And urination - water component of fat tissue.)

Music to my eyes! Ian Stuart's @atomicschool has the resources you need to teach atoms & molecules in primary school. This video of Yr 1 & 2 kids learning to write chemical formulas Eagleby State School will blow your mind invidious.fdn.fr/2vQqKt4kMdk

Where does the "C" in exhaled CO₂ come from? This gaping black hole in health literacy feeds the weight loss industry and keeps the fads coming. My @TEDx talk explains the biochemistry and why we need to start teaching it in primary school invidious.fdn.fr/nM-ySWyID9o

Dear @australian, some science facts for you: 1) diamond is 100% carbon but not black 2) hair is >50% carbon but Ian Plimer's is not black 3) skin is >50% carbon, Plimer's, not black 4) exhaled air ~5% CO₂, not black 5) dry ice 100% CO₂, not black Any questions, just ask

I shot this time-lapse inside my freezer in 2012 with a GoPro Hero 2 and two el-cheapo LED lights. I'm working on a 3D animation that explains why water expands while nearly all other substances shrink when they freeze ❄️ It's all about the atoms! abc.net.au/science/articles/…
