Where does the "C" in exhaled CO₂ come from? This gaping black hole in health literacy feeds the weight loss industry and keeps the fads coming. My @TEDx talk explains the biochemistry and why we need to start teaching it in primary school invidious.fdn.fr/nM-ySWyID9o

Photosynthesis and cellular respiration ARE taught repeatedly during science classes from year 7 onwards. Biology is also the most chosen science. Part of the current problem with science not being considered relevant and no retention of information.

The problem is the sequence of the science curriculum which leaves atoms and molecules until Year 9 and the Periodic Table is taught in Year 10. It’s always been that way. Time to change it.

For NSW syllabus, we teach periodic table in year 8, acids and bases year 9 and then other reactions (combustion etc) year 10. Chem actually builds quite nicely.

The fact they still don't retain this information is a big issue with all of the fake science being thrown around. No ability to fact check. If it's on the internet it must be true!

I do a unit on sugar as part of healthy eating in Stage 3. It’s mainly about reading nutrition labels & measuring out how many grams of sugar in popular foods/drinks, but we touch on metabolism of simple & complex carbs. Would be great to have more age appropriate resources!

Music to my eyes! Ian Stuart's @atomicschool has the resources you need to teach atoms & molecules in primary school. This video of Yr 1 & 2 kids learning to write chemical formulas Eagleby State School will blow your mind invidious.fdn.fr/2vQqKt4kMdk
