In Jan 1988, I attended a Kissinger lecture at the Heritage Fndtn. He said then that the USSR wouldn’t fall apart, that we’d see an independent California sooner than an indep Ukraine. 4 years later, I saw him in Kyiv seeking a contract to be an advisor to our first President.

I hope whoever's advising the new Australian government is more competent than this.
After the AUKUS fallout, a new government in Canberra creates the basis for a Franco-Australian rapprochement. That reset will be necessary for Australia to restore balance in its global relations and for investing in independent relations with major Indo-Pacific players.
