I've officially done over 200 PM interviews at Google, and at this momentous milestone I've got some thoughts to share with any passing PMs. 1/

In every interview I ask about a product they've worked on that didn't succeed in the way they had hoped. 9 times out of 10 they don't succeed because they didn't understand their users well enough up front. I love this question b/c the root cause is almost always the same! 2/

No criticisms of the candidates; my failures have the same root cause too! Just a good reminder: we must talk to users way more than we do. 3/

Structuring your interview response almost always adds a solid letter grade to my assessment. Brilliance will shine through, but it's harder to see if you're taking me down a stream-of-consciousness slip and slide. 4/

I always tell candidates I want them to do well, but that's not quite right: I either want them to be amazing or terrible, not in between. Makes writing feedback so much easier! 5/

Interviews are a 2-way convo: you're taking a huge risk by monopolizing the convo without taking my temp. So many candidates talk over me (esp. bad during remote interviews) and make it hard for me to direct them. See previous: I WANT you to be amazing, let me help you. 6/

Related to previous: time management. Your interviewer needs to assess you on a set of criteria, and waxing long in a response can reduce their ability to get a full read on you. Manage your time wisely! 7/

Yes, interviewing is a practice-able skill, and no, I have no idea if it correlates to job performance. But preparing for important conversations, presenting information, and articulating your point of view are all important PM skills, so at least do that. 8/

I argue that product manager is the best job in tech today, and I wish any passersby the best in their PM careers (or the worst, makes writing feedback easier ;) fin/

I read a book on 9/11, and I've been thinking about the trauma from Covid. Did you know we've had more deaths than 9/11 in just the 18-29 age group? And 4 9/11s for 30s. data.cdc.gov/widgets/9bhg-hc…

Reading The Only Plane in the Sky surfaced my emotions from 20 years ago. I wonder how the trauma of the two events is the same, and how it is different.
