Spending $800 an hour to fly the helicopter to tell kids to get out of the pool because we don’t have money for lifeguards just sums up America perfectly.
“This is the Baltimore City Police Dept. helicopter unit. Please exit the swimming pool. There is no lifeguard on duty. For your safety, exit the swimming pool.”

A Bell 407 costs about $3000 per flight hour to operate, or 120 lifeguards paid $25 / hour.

Might be barking up the wrong tree here. Unless this is a different situation than we’re experiencing in Philadelphia, it’s not about the money, we simply can’t hire lifeguards, no one wants the job.

I don't think they're Bells they look more like Eurocopter EC135s. Additionally, that model costs $1246.51/hr to fly. (Source: aircraftcostcalculator.com/A…)

They're actually EC120s but same difference. ATM they're also getting 3 new ones with all the bells and whistles from a broker and it looks likely the city's taking a bath on it. Could open a lot of pools for that kind of $. H/T Mark Reutter @BaltimoreBrew baltimorebrew.com/2022/01/05…

You are being very generous at $25 per hour

shit.. after taxes that $25 an hour is barely gonna cover the gas to drive there in today’s economy.

Just to be clear. It’s not about not wanting to pay lifeguards $25/hr, it’s about not being able to get anyone to be a lifeguard. My guess is the helicopter was already up there doing police work, not sent up to clear the pool. But point taken.

How about paying a lifeguard $40/hr

It is mostly that there is a shortage of certified and trained lifeguards nationwide. However, long term and thoughtful planning would have them use resources now for lifeguard training programs so that they can meet the need later this year, and in the future.

They always find something to be flying about anyway, so it’s probably not actually additional time.
