The retraction was forced and undeserved. If you analyze the 4 inserts as a group coming from a single genome and coming together in the 3D protein structure to form the receptor binding site, the results become highly significant.

For the only virus to have QTQTNS (prior to 2020), and (in another genome) QTNS and PRRA. It's significant imo. HIV isn't a large genome <10000 nucleotides.

It has also been the focus of many unsuccessful vaccine attempts, including LAVs. The earliest genome I found containing the QTNS motif was uploaded by USAMRIID, who were at the forefront of HIV vaccine development.

But they are not inserts. These short AA sequences exist in many ancestral bat genomes. Not to mention that they are coded by different codons between SARS2 and HIV.
